Sterling Planet to provide renewable energy to USAF, US Army, DOE other federal agencies

ATLANTA, GA, October 19, 2007 – Sterling Planet, in cooperation with the Defense Energy Support Center (DESC), has entered another contract with the federal government to supply Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). This latest government REC purchase calls for an additional 721,804,127 kilowatt hours over a one-year period.

The order, obtained through a competitive bid process managed by DESC, represents enough renewable energy to power about 70,000 average U.S. homes for a full year and avert more than 1 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions that would have occurred from use of conventionally produced electricity from nonrenewable sources. The environmental benefit compares to neutralizing the carbon dioxide emissions of about 88,000 passenger cars over a one-year period.

Entities involved in the purchase include 8 US Air Force installations, two US Army locations and three Department of Energy labs, plus an array of other federal government offices: Bureau of Indian Affairs, Custom and Border Protection, Department of Commerce, Department of Veterans Affairs, Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, Interior Department, Internal Revenue Service and National Institute of Standards & Technology.

For the USAF, participants include Air Education and Training Command, Air Force Academy, Air Mobility Command, Air National Guard, Eglin Air Force Base, Kirkland Air Force Base, Reserve Command and Special Operations Command. US Army sites are Ft. Meade and the Research Laboratory at Adelphi, MD. DOE locations are the Fermi, Jefferson and Idaho laboratories.

RECs are the intangible environmental benefits associated with generating one megawatt hour of electricity by a renewable resource such as wind energy. These resources generate electricity with little or no man-made carbon dioxide emissions and have a superior environmental profile to conventional power production. Buying RECs helps support the development of new renewable energy capacity nationwide.

"Buying renewable energy is the right thing to do, and this commitment falls right in line with the basic government objectives, such as environmental quality, local economic development, technological advances and fiscal responsibility,” said Kelly Bennett, Sterling Planet's National Policy Director. The USAF is the leading government buyer of renewable energy and currently ranks in the No. 5 spot among the nation’s largest purchasers of renewable energy, according to the EPA Green Power Partnership.

“What a difference these military installations and federal agencies are making to the environment, to increased energy independence and to domestic economies,” said Mel Jones, Sterling Planet President and CEO. “We are proud that we were chosen again to provide these government arms affordable alternative energy resources.”
