National award honors nations leading retail provider of renewable energy
ATLANTA, GA, September 23, 2013 -- Sterling Planet announced today that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized the renewable energy marketer with a 2013 Green Power Leadership Award. The award annually lauds the country’s leading green power suppliers for outstanding efforts, initiatives and programs that significantly advance the development of green power sources. EPA presented Sterling Planet with the award today at an event held in conjunction with the 2013 Renewable Energy Markets Conference in Austin, Texas.
“On behalf of our customers, who continue to demonstrate their commitment to the environment through their renewable energy purchases, we at Sterling Planet are proud to receive this prestigious award from EPA,” said Mel Jones, Sterling Planet president and chief executive officer. “Our customers’ collective purchase of tens of billions of renewable energy kilowatt-hours over the past 13 years have transformed the green power market, made renewable energy a mainstream choice and demonstrated that supporting green power is a sound business decision.”
Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, eligible biomass, and low-impact hydro. Using green power accelerates the development of new renewable energy capacity nationwide and helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector.
“EPA is pleased to recognize Sterling Planet with a Green Power Supplier of the Year award for its innovative leadership in expanding the nation’s renewable energy industry,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. “Through its support and development of new renewable energy capacity, Sterling Planet is taking action against climate change and putting our country on a path to a clean energy future.”
Recognized by EPA as Green Power Supplier of the Year in both 2012 and 2013, Sterling Planet delivers more than 7 billion renewable energy certificate (REC) kilowatt-hours annually to EPA Green Power Partnership members, including the nation’s top three large-volume purchasers. The company caters to the needs of consumers and businesses of all sizes and types that are working to reduce their environmental footprint. Over the past 13 years, Sterling Planet has led the nation in retail REC sales, supplying a large quantity that represents enough electricity to power five million average U.S. homes for a year and create an environmental benefit that compares to taking 8.8 million cars off U.S. roads for a year.
