Intel Corp. Receives Green Power Leadership Award

Sterling Planet’s client nominee also named Green Power Partner of the Year

ATLANTA, October 28, 2008 – Sterling Planet announced today that its client nominee, Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) has received a 2008 Green Power Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and was also named a Green Power Partner of the Year. The annual awards recognize the country’s leading green power purchasers for their voluntary commitment and contribution to helping advance development of the nation’s green power market.

Sterling Planet, Intel’s primary supplier of Renewable Energy Certificates, nominated Intel for an EPA award to recognize the company’s clear commitment to environmental responsibility. EPA presented the award to Intel Monday, Oct. 27, in conjunction with the 2008 National Renewable Energy Marketing Conference in Denver. Intel’s large renewable energy commitment contributed to Sterling Planet also receiving its second consecutive Renewable Energy Marketer of the Year Award from the U.S. Department of Energy.

In early 2008, Intel committed to purchase Sterling Planet renewable energy certificates (RECs) in an annual amount of approximately 1.3 billion kilowatt hours, which represents enough electricity to match about 47 percent of Intel’s purchased electricity use and earn Intel the No. 1 spot on the EPA Fortune 500 Green Power Partners List.

The EPA Green Power Partnership program encourages and recognizes voluntary green power purchases as a way to reduce the impact of conventional electricity use. Intel also is a member of EPA’s Climate Leaders program, an industry-government partnership that works with companies to develop comprehensive climate change strategies. As an EPA Climate Leader, Intel has pledged to reduce global GHG emissions by 30 percent per unit of production from 2001 to 2010.

"Intel's outstanding commitment to renewable energy provides significant support for market-based mechanisms for renewable energy technologies of all types," said Mel Jones, Sterling Planet president and CEO. "We commend Intel for their vision and leadership in all aspects of corporate responsibility."

Sterling Planet supplied Intel with RECs sourced mainly from renewable energy projects concentrated in locations where Intel operates. Solar projects in California and wind projects in the Southwest and Pacific Northwest are dominant in this REC mix, supplemented by biomass projects from sources nationwide. All the RECs carry certification from the Green-e Energy program of the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions.

Renewable Energy Certificates, or RECs, are the "currency" of the renewable energy market and are widely recognized as having credible and tangible environmental benefits. The EPA estimates that Intel's REC purchase avoids the annual release of 925,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from conventional electricity generators using fossil fuels. The RECs have the equivalent environmental impact of taking more than 185,000 passenger cars off the road each year. The REC purchase represents enough electricity to power more than 130,000 average American homes annually.

Beyond the environmental benefits, Intel’s commitment to RECs supports domestic energy sources. This helps the economy at multiple levels and increases national energy independence.
